Johnny Herbert, a former Formula 1 driver and current FIA race steward, has responded to criticism from Jos Verstappen. Jos is the father of F1 world champion Max Verstappen. Herbert defends his right to express opinions on Max’s performance, following a recent controversy during the Mexico Grand Prix.
Verstappen’s Mexico Grand Prix Controversy
During the Mexico Grand Prix, Max Verstappen received time penalties that led Johnny Herbert to comment on his future conduct. Herbert expressed concern that the penalties might not deter Verstappen from his aggressive driving tactics, particularly against Lando Norris.
Jos Verstappen’s Reaction
Jos Verstappen reacted strongly against Herbert’s remarks. He criticised Herbert for publicly discussing race matters, arguing that stewards should not engage with the media. Jos asserted, ‘A steward shouldn’t talk to the press at all and just deliver work all the time.’
Brazilian Grand Prix Tensions
The tension escalated at the Brazilian Grand Prix where Max Verstappen faced further scrutiny. Sky F1 analyst Damon Hill joined in criticising Verstappen’s on-track actions. Max responded by suggesting bias against him, stating, ‘I’ve got the wrong passport for this paddock.’
Despite these controversies, Johnny Herbert maintained his impartiality while acting as a race steward. He defended his dual role as both a steward and a pundit, separating his professional duties from his media commentary.
Herbert’s Response to Jos
In addressing Jos Verstappen’s grievances, Herbert declared his integrity intact. He mentioned Jos’s history of publicly critiquing Red Bull’s strategy, highlighting a double standard in Jos’s comments.
‘I am Johnny Herbert the steward and the professional during a race weekend and Johnny Herbert a pundit at other times, who expresses what he thinks,’ Herbert stated, implying there was no conflict in his roles.
