Williams Welcomes Zoox as First Autonomous Vehicle Partner in Formula 1

The Williams Formula 1 team has announced an innovative partnership with Zoox, an autonomous ride-hailing company. Beginning at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the Zoox logo will be prominently displayed on the cars of Williams drivers Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto during F1 races held in the United States. This partnership marks a significant milestone as it represents the first-ever collaboration between a Formula 1 team and an autonomous vehicle company.

Breaking New Ground in Motorsport

Zoox, which operates as an independent subsidiary of Amazon, is testing its autonomous vehicles in key US locations, including the homes of three Formula 1 races: Austin, Miami, and Las Vegas. The public will start experiencing Zoox’s autonomous rides in these areas starting next year.

James Vowles, team principal of Williams Racing, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, noting, “Williams Racing is excited to bring the future of mobility to Formula 1 and is delighted to welcome Zoox as the first autonomous vehicle company to become a partner in the sport.”

Shared Values and Vision

Vowles further explained that while Formula 1 traditionally focuses on showcasing the world’s best drivers, this partnership is a synergy of cutting-edge automotive technology. Both Williams and Zoox share a commitment to innovation and advancing technology. With this partnership, they aim to highlight the parallels between motorsport and the burgeoning autonomous vehicle industry.

The Significance of the Partnership

The collaboration will enable Zoox to reach a broader audience, tapping into the extensive fan base of Williams and the global F1 community. Carly Wyatt, Head of Communications and Marketing at Zoox, emphasized that the partnership reflects mutual values in performance pursuit and precision.

“This unique collaboration between a Formula 1 racing team and a robotaxi company presents an opportunity to provide deeper insights into how these two industries are utilizing similar technologies, including AI advancements, to reshape motorsports and mobility.”

Williams: A Strategy for Expansion

Williams is no stranger to forming strategic partnerships. Following Williams’ signing of Colapinto, two Argentinian-founded companies, Globant and Mercado Libre, joined as partners. Furthermore, Gulf has broadened its partnership with the team.

The team, owned by the US-based private investment firm Dorilton, aims to forge new connections while climbing higher in the Constructors’ Championship, where it finished seventh last season.
