In a move that startled many, the FIA recently dismissed Janette Tan, who was set to lead the final two rounds of the Formula 2 series as race director. Consequently, Rui Marques, F1’s current race director, is temporarily handling added responsibilities. Additionally, senior steward Tim Mayer has been removed, reportedly following disagreements with FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem concerning a controversial track invasion during the United States Grand Prix.
These abrupt changes have compounded the driver fraternity’s call for greater consistency and clarity from the FIA. George Russell, who serves as a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, voiced his frustration at learning about these significant shifts through the media rather than official channels.

Russell articulated the concerns of many drivers: “Just when we’ve asked for… a bit of transparency and consistency, we’re getting rid of two highly important people in the governing body,” highlighting the chaos this generates within the organisation. Formula 1 has been on a healthy growth trajectory since Liberty Media’s acquisition, aided by leaders like Stefano Domenicali, whose vast racing experience is well-regarded.
Russell remains confident in the sport’s administration under Domenicali, affirming, “I think everybody has faith in Liberty and faith in Stefano… We just need to make sure that the sport stays in this position or continues to grow.”
