Amidst whispers of discord within the governing body, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem remains unfazed by recent criticisms, including those from Formula 1 drivers. Speaking ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix, Ben Sulayem boldly declared that how he runs the FIA is “none of their business.”
FIA Under Scrutiny
The FIA has recently seen a spate of high-level departures, notably including F1 race director Niels Wittich. This has led to questions and criticisms about the organisation’s internal stability. Additionally, an open letter from the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) requested greater transparency on fines and urged the FIA to treat drivers more respectfully.
Ben Sulayem’s Firm Stance
In light of the GPDA’s concerns, Ben Sulayem has remained steadfast, emphasizing that his focus is on improving the FIA. “None of their business,” he remarked, signalling a clear boundary between the FIA’s internal affairs and the drivers’ sphere. Despite his background as a driver, Ben Sulayem insists that drivers should stay focused on racing, leaving administrative matters to the FIA.
Investments in Motorsport
Ben Sulayem highlighted that over €10.3 million was invested in grassroots motorsport last year, with a similar amount planned for 2024. These funds have supported motorsport development in 85 countries and funded 70 safety projects at a cost of €2.7 million. Further investments have been made in operational safety, medical costs, and technical regulation projects.
Focus on FIA’s Mission
When questioned about recent dismissals and internal decisions, Ben Sulayem maintained that his responsibility lies with the FIA’s member clubs. “This is our business,” he stated, underscoring the importance of internal governance without outside influence.
Confident in the FIA’s Direction
Despite headlines suggesting internal chaos, Ben Sulayem is optimistic about the FIA’s future. He pointed out that while staff departures have gained attention, the FIA has been actively recruiting and expanding its team with 64 new employees in 2023 and 92 in 2024.
The Bigger Picture
Ben Sulayem confidently dismissed external criticisms, affirming that his priority is the FIA’s betterment. He candidly shared that he lives “free of charge in their brains,” unfazed by criticisms of sexism or financial misconduct. Ben Sulayem is resolute in his mission to strengthen the FIA, regardless of external noise.
For Ben Sulayem, addressing the notion of a “crisis” is straightforward. He stated, “I actually have more important things to do than worrying about media speculations.” His focus is squarely on advancing the organisation’s integrity and performance.
