Despite the dry conditions witnessed earlier when McLaren’s Lando Norris clinched victory in Saturday morning’s sprint race, the weather took a turn. Torrential rain and a significant thunderstorm ensued, leading to race control’s decision to delay the qualifying session.
The Efforts to Assess Conditions
Around 20 minutes past the initial start time, the FIA dispatched the medical car to evaluate the track’s usability. Growing puddles and persistent downpour meant the surface remained unsuitable for competitive driving. Marshals worked diligently to clear standing water, but with little immediate success.
By 1615 local time, the rain’s intensity increased, thwarting hopes of an imminent start. The FIA continued its assessment, initially considering launching the session at 1700. However, with Sao Paulo’s sunset at 1821, organisers faced a logistical challenge, as this was the latest time deemed safe for action on the track.
